Indeterminism
We added new infrastructure to our tomato growing efforts in 2021. Despite the cooler weather and strong winds of Western Washington, we wanted to experiment with growing cherry tomatoes—the longest growing variety of all indeterminates—with non-covered trellising. This particular spot on the farm gets the most direct sunlight through the day. Knowing that cherry tomatoes are generally quicker ripening than larger varieties, we opted to grow the cherry toms as tall as possible, unconstrained by the plastic ceiling of our 5’ tall hoop houses.
Approximately 17 cherry tomato starts—”Gardener’s Sweetheart and “Black Cherry”—were individually strung up to a top bar 10-feet in the sky. It was time consuming and extremely satisfying work in service of the plants.
